User Path Analysis & Behavior Flow | Keentics

User path analysis shows you what people actually do in your product, step after step, instead of the journey you assumed when you designed it. Starting from any event, Keentics traces the most common sequences forward (or backward) and renders them as a Sankey flow diagram, where the width of each branch is the number of users who took it. For product and UX teams, it is the fastest way to discover surprising detours, dead ends and shortcuts hidden in the raw event stream.

Read the Sankey flow

A path diagram starts from an anchor event — say app_open — and fans out into the events that follow. Thick ribbons are the highways most users travel; thin ones are the side roads. Because Keentics builds the flow from full event data, you see the long tail of real behavior, not a tidied-up ideal. You can anchor on a conversion event and run the path backward to learn which routes lead to a purchase, or anchor on a drop-off and run it forward to see where lost users scatter.

Find the routes that convert — and the ones that don’t

The flows that lead to value and the flows that leak are both visible in the same chart. When you see a fat branch peeling off before a key step, that is a funnel problem you can quantify in funnel analysis. When you see users looping through a settings screen before churning, that is a UX problem path analysis just surfaced. Path analysis is the discovery layer; funnels are where you measure the fix.

Segment paths to find the why

Aggregate paths can blur two opposite behaviors into one. Split the flow by cohort, platform, acquisition channel or new-vs-returning to see how journeys diverge. New users and veterans often take completely different routes to the same outcome, and a single Sankey averages them into something that describes neither. Pair path analysis with retention analysis to learn which early paths predict users who stick.

Why teams pick Keentics for path analysis

  • Sankey flow on full event data, forward or backward from any anchor.
  • Drill from a flow into a funnel or cohort without re-querying from scratch.
  • Read-only SQL to inspect the exact event sequences behind any ribbon.
  • No per-project pricing and full export, so path analysis scales across every title and app you ship.

Path analysis pairs naturally with LTV analysis — once you know which routes convert, you can ask which ones produce the most valuable users.
